8 secrets that makes a student excel
Having academic excellence is what every student want and this will not become reality if you do not study. The 8 secrets that will make you outstanding academically are:
1. Adding 'extra' to ordinary things: What differentiates ordinary students from extraordinary students is the 'extra' the latter added to ordinary things. If you want to be outstanding, you must resolve to be extraordinary in terms of the quality hours spent while reading, preparation for examination, etc. I could remember in my final year when a lecturer scored me 21 instead of 20. He looked for me and told me how he added 1 extra mark because of my extraordinary effort. What did I really do that made him add an extra mark?: He dropped a material that has only one diagram. I read the material and learnt extra two diagrams different from the one he gave in the material, exam came and I gave him everything including the diagrams I learnt on my own.
2. The early bird principle: If you must be outstanding academically, you must apply the early bird principle. This simply means that you must start preparation as early as possible, preferably at the beginning of the semester. If you want to enjoy your pap you must eat it while it's hot because when it becomes cold you might not enjoy it. Same applies here, don't wait till they release examination timetable before you start preparation.
3. Understand your lecturers: A proper understanding of your lecturers will give you an idea of what they want from you during examination. So as they lecture, pay attention to the things they lay emphasis on.
4. Don't procrastinate: This is one reason why students have poor academic performance. The time is NOW and not LATER. Procrastination is laziness and unproductiveness in disguise.
5. Teach others: There are several benefits of teaching others, when you do so, you tend to master it more. You can't easily forget what you taught someone and you can always reproduce them when the need arises.
6. Have a teachable heart: Some people can not be taught or lectured because they feel they know it all. Be humble and learn from lecturers and fellow students.
7. Adopt a reading pattern: This is very important and as a student, you should adopt a reading pattern that suits you. For instance, there's the SQ3R reading skill/pattern which stands for:
S---Survey
Q---Question
R---Read
R---Recite
R---Review
Know what works best for you and also know when you tend to comprehend more whether during the day or at night.
8. Maintain a certain standard: In doing this, you have to put on the breast plate of optimism. If you set a standard for yourself, do everything possible to maintain it. Take for instance you set a standard for yourself that your G.P won't be less than 4.5 on a scale of 5.0, ensure you maintain this standard; anything less is an error, anything more is a blessing.
